Anne Hathaway has signed on to star in a new limited TV series.

The project is and adaptation of Jennifer Steil's novel The Ambassador's Wife, chronicling the kidnapping of an American woman in a Middle Eastern country.

The 32-year-old will play the title character, which is loosely based on the author's personal experiences being married to the British Ambassador to Yemen.

The TV show will centre on the extremes one woman goes through to be reunited with her husband.

The novel was published by Doubleday, while the TV project is being developed by Mark Gordon and Entertainment One.

Gordon said of Hathaway, who also serves as producer on the project: 'The Ambassador’s Wife is an incredible story that pulls you in immediately and resonates with all of us based on the images and news headlines that are pervasive in our lives today.

'We are so fortunate to have Anne starring in this timely, gripping, and compassionate drama. She is in a league all her own and we cannot think of anyone who can better portray Steil’s complex heroine.'

Hathaway certainly has her work cut out for her as the book is based on the author's gripping real world experience in the Middle East.

Steil's husband is Timothy Achille Torlot, who is currently serving as the European Union Ambassador to Bolivia.

When he was stationed in Yemen, as UK Ambassador, was attacked in 2010 by a suicide bomber.

While accompanying her husband, Steil became the editor-in-chief of the Yemen Observer in Sana’a, Yemen.

Meanwhile, Hathaway can next be seen on the big screen in The Intern opposite Robert De Niro which is released on September 25.
