Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and Tunisian violinist, Yasmine Azaiez will be performing at the Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) at 7.30pm on Tuesday.

The concert will bring together the best of Arab and jazz traditions as both artistes draw on their roots as well as their Western musical training, stated a press release.

Azmeh combines classical music with jazz and Syrian music with his famous ensemble, Kinan Azmeh’s City Band.

The Yasmine Azaiez Band brings together Arab, jazz and Gypsy music, and they will play a set of original compositions by Yasmine, as well as traditional pieces rearranged with a modern, colourful sound.

Speaking about the musicians, Umberto Fanni, artistic director ROHM said, “They are both incredibly gifted musicians who bring their own musical cultures into their passion for jazz, uniting the best of both genres. They are both wonderfully talented improvisers and their music fulfills the vision of this opera house to foster cultural dialogue.”

Born in Damascus in 1976, Azmeh studied at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City and was the first Arab to win the premier prize at the 1997 Nicolai Rubinstein International Competition, Moscow.

Yasmine started playing the violin when she was four years old. At 17, she competed in the Sevenoaks violin playing competition, where she impressed the jury of professors from the Royal College of Music in London and was named ‘Young Musician of the Year’.
