ASHLEY JUDD, WHO glistened in the Mississippi heat in A Time to Kill almost as beatifically as Matthew McConaughy, is no stranger to show business, not after growing up with mom Naomi and big sister Wynonna in the country music spotlight. This Kentucky girl maintains that though she is still just a country gal, when it comes to her professional career, she would rather count her Hollywood chickens than those in Nashville.

Since arriving in La La Land, this hot young actress's career has been a constant climb to greater heights. Two years after playing Swoosie Kurtz's troubled daughter on the TV series Sisters, Judd made her feature film debut in Ruby in Paradise, which excited the Sundance crowd back in 1993, copping the Grand Jury Prize at the festival.

Her already fast-track career, which began in New York theater (she made her stage debut in Naked Angels' production of Busted, which was directed by Timothy Hutton, and went on to star as Madge on Broadway in Picnic), has picked up even more steam. In addition to wowing audiences as Norma Jean in HBO's Norma Jean & Marilyn, Judd played McConaughey's uncompromising wife in the box-office hit, A Time To Kill, based on John Grisham's first novel. She stars opposite Luke Perry in the Don McNaughton drama, Normal Life, and Morgan Freeman in the thriller, Kiss the Girls.

When she can find the time, Ashley likes to escape to Peaceful Valley, the Judd family's thousand-acre farm in Tennessee. She owns a century-old house there that she is currently restoring. She says that she is modeling it after C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, complete with unusual cubbyholes and secret passageways. Sounds very Southern Gothic.
