Syrian singer and musician Bashar Zarqan performed two concerts at Sama Theater in Damascus, at which he sang his new artwork Urid An Ahia (I Want to Live) inspired by the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish’s poem Jedaryia.
Zarqan performed Urid An Ahia, for the first time, last July at the opening ceremony of the Jerash Festival for Arts and Culture in the Roman ancient city, in front of a Jordanian and Arab audience.
For his song, Zarqan chose pieces of the poem which expresses the poet’s stubbornness while confronting death and his struggle to stay alive.
Zarqan’s song is considered as a real musical adventure as the poem is a long dramatic monologue and it is the least rhythmic poem by Darwish.
Zarqan presented his artwork in theatrical frame along with a chorus and female singer Dima Qandaleft. Zarqan based on the eastern music instruments, oud, buzoq and nai (flute), as well as the western instruments, violent, cello and contrabass.
Zarqan started his artistic career in the early 80's. He presented his music compositions and performances in various plays. He also wrote poetic scripts for a number of plays all holding themes of a humanistic nature. Through his musical productions Zarqan establishes a strong bond between himself and his audiences throughout the Arab world.
