Winners of the 43rd International Emmy Awards were announced Monday night at a Gala event in the New York Hilton, attended by more than 1,000 international television professionals and hosted by Egyptian comedian Bassem Youssef. In all, 12 Emmys, which included two special award statues, were presented.
“Television is a universal art form that transcends cultures, languages and borders,” said Bruce L. Paisner, International Academy president, according to a statement. “In light of recent terrible events, the International Academy is particularly proud to congratulate all of the winners — among which three from France — for shining a global spotlight on their cultural heritage with the Emmy.”
Those French programs led the night with Emmys in arts programming, drama series and TV movie/miniseries categories, followed by Brazilian programs with two Emmys in the comedy and telenovela categories, according to the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Academy Award winning actor and producer Michael Douglas presented the International Emmy Directorate Award to Richard Plepler, chairman and CEO of HBO.
Elizabeth McGovern, who stars as Lady Cora in Downton Abbey, along with the show’s executive producer, Gareth Neame, presented the International Emmy Founders Award to (Academy Award and Emmy Award winner) Downton Abbey creator and writer Julian Fellowes, according to the academy.
