And while the Duke and Duchess have not yet announced the gender of their new arrival, Princess Alice has now emerged as the bookies' favourite. According to Ladbrokes, Alice is tipped as the most popular girl's name while Philip is top of the list for a little boy.

The name Philip is likely to be a nod to William's grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, who officially retired from public duties last year aged 96 and recently underwent a hip replacement.

While Alice, a French name meaning 'of nobility', was given to the third child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, born at Buckingham Palace in 1843

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, parents to Prince George, four and Princess Charlotte, two, are preparing to welcome their third child this month.

Preparations are being made at the exclusive Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital, West London, with media barriers being installed outside the building.
