Historically the center for Roman and Islamic assaults, Carthage is experiencing a new kind of invasion from international artists keen to play at the annual music festival in October. Among those participating are American singer Louise Macomb and Lebanese singers Marcel Khalifa, Ragheb Alama, Wael Jassar and Najwa Karam.

The festival has been given the go ahead, despite recent bloody confrontations between police and Islamists in Tunisia, who strongly opposed an art exhibition they claimed featured portraits that clearly offended Islam. Fears of an Islamist backlash against the festival haven't stopped organizers putting together an impressive line up.

Alongside international stars, Tunisian artists Lutfi Bushnaq, Al Shathili Al haji, Hassan Al Dahmani, Adnan Al Shawashi, Ulfah Bin Ramadan, Dardaf Al Hamdani and Saber Al Rebai will all be playing.
