The 55-year-old Cuban violinist Pedro Depestre of the renowned Cuban jazz group Buena Vista Social Club died after collapsing on stage here Sunday during a concert, the Swiss ATS news agency said on Monday.
Depestre collapsed after performing a solo and could not be revived, despite a doctor being in the audience and the rapid arrival of an ambulance, the agency said.
Following his death, organizers and the group cancelled a planned concert Monday in Cologne, Germany.
The musicians of Buena Vista Social Club, some of whom are aged in their seventies and eighties, have sold at least four million copies of their latest album.
They were featured in a 1999 film by the German director Wim Wenders -- AFP
