ALBAWABA - Rape convict and Brazilian football player Dani Alves is set to be released from jail pending an appeal against his rape conviction in exchange for posting bail of one million euros ($108,000), a Barcelona court said Wednesday.
The verdict came a day after his legal team requested his release, claiming that he had already served a quarter of his four-and-a-half-year term in pre-trial custody since his arrest in January 2023.
Later in December, Alves was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a nightclub, allegations which he then denied, only to be moved to trial and later be found guilty and convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to four years and six months in jail.
Nonetheless, the football star is asked to pay 150,000 euros to the victim by the court after she accused him of raping her on 2022 New Year's Eve.
Moreover, Dani Alves told the Spanish TV channel Antena 3 in 2023: "I was dancing and having a good time without invading anyone's space."
He maintained: "I don't know who this lady is... How could I do that to a woman? No".
Dani Alves's suicide rumors
Earlier in March, rumors circulated on social media about Dani Alves' suicide on Saturday evening, without an official or confirmed statement from Alves' family or even from his lawyer or media representatives.
Following the news, Brazilian journalist Marcelo Pichler reported that Daniel Alves' representatives, after speaking with a lawyer, refuted rumors that the player had committed suicide in his cell where he was serving his sentence for raping a young Spanish woman.
