Controversial Egyptian belly dancer Dina revealed that she trained to dance in nightclubs shortly before filming her latest movie “Shari’ Al Haram” (Al Haram Street), screened during the Muslim holiday Eid El Fitr. So far, the film is the highest grossing among all films released in the Arab world during the holidays.
According to the London based Elaph, Dina said that she repeatedly plays the role of a dancer in films, because she is always nominated by producers for such roles.
Dina also said that she did not appear in films for a short time, because she was waiting to find a suitable role.
When the role in the film “Shari’ Al Haram” was presented to her, she was very interested in the story, said Dina, since it is very similar to her actual life story. Dina’s character is a dancer who begins dancing in a local band and grows to become a well-known dancer in Egypt’s popular “Al Haram Street”.
Dina said that throughout her dancing career she never danced at nightclubs, and did so for the first time in the film. She practiced the techniques of nightclub dancers to ensure that her role is convincing, said Dina.
The dancer revealed that she contributed to changing the ending of the film, which initially had the dancer she plays resign because she realizes that dancing is against the teachings of Islam.
The new ending Dina agreed on with the film makers has the dancer resign from nightclub performances, but continues traditional and folkloric dancing.
