We've finally gotten a taste of what the upcoming Dubai-set English-language sitcom "DCity" is going to be like.
A 30-second promo introducing viewers to the show's three quirky characters was released on YouTube on August 8.
Starring Mylène Gomera, Laura Quirke and Dalia Sharawi, and created by the talented young Jordanian writer/director Naim Zaboura, the promo begins and ends with shots of iconic landmarks including the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab.
It then goes on to show us the comedic interactions between the characters in their daily lives in glamorous Dubai.
The plot
According to The National, the series follows a group of expatriates living in Dubai. The first is a spoilt American daddy's girl who's a real-estate business owner, the second is a young Aussie office manager and the third a British flight attendant.
Its brainchild, Zaboura, has long believed in viewers' craving for an English-speaking TV series set in the Middle East.
“The way this came about is that ever since I was in film school, I’ve wanted to write for TV,” said Zaboura, who went to the New York Film Academy in Abu Dhabi. “And I’ve been so frustrated waiting for someone to believe in English-language programming in the Middle East that I decided to do something about it myself,” he told The National.
Now, his dream has come true with a 30-episode TV series - after being picked up by the Arab Telemedia Group in Jordan - rather than the originally-planned 10-minute web series idea.
The pilot 'Date Me Out of Here' starts with Quirke's character on a bad date, and future episodes will showcase Dubai's melting pot of cultures against the backdrop of the city's arts and culture scene.
A set release date is yet to be announced, but we know that it's sometime early next year.
