"Welad El-Batta El-Soda" (Children of the Black Duck) is an Egyptian expression often used sarcastically to describe a group facing discrimination.

Appropriately, Welad El-Batta El-Soda, the theatre production that will be showing at Cairo's Hanager Theatre from 14 to 23 April, is about discrimination within Egyptian society.

Many forms of discrimination exist in Egypt – against women, Christians, ethnic minorities like Nubians and individuals whose beliefs are different than the norm – not to mention those who are poor and lack opportunity or who are physically or mentally disabled.

In Welad El-Batta El-Soda, the performers explore the concept of discrimination: Is it inherent in society, an integral part of it? Or has it been nurtured throughout the years? Is it the norm? Or is it still practiced only by a random few? Most importantly: will it ever stop?

The show combines acting, singing and storytelling, and flows animatedly for one-and-a-half hours.

Programme:
Monday, 14 April to Thursday, 17 April & Wednesday, 23 April at 7.30pm
Hanager Theatre, Cairo Opera House grounds, Zamalek, Cairo
