Although he wore an upset expression, Elton was keen to reassure his fans that nothing was amiss.
The Rocketman hitmaker said: 'Not even a sprained ankle could keep me away from seeing one one of the most beautiful museums in the world.'
Dressed in a blue co-ordinated tracksuit, Elton paired his look with white trainers and his signature tinted sunglasses.
In May last year he told Good Morning Britain that he was ready to say goodbye to the touring life, as he's 'had enough' of it.
Talking candidly about his final tour, he said: 'I'm looking forward to saying goodbye. It's not a publicity stunt because I am saying goodbye to touring, I've had enough.'
He continued: 'To be honest with you I want to move on and do different things.'
When asked to clarify what his retirement would mean for the future, and specifically for his kids Elijah, six, and Zachary, eight, Elton explained: 'They're thriving, they're great kids. They're funny, they keep us amused.
'That's why I'm coming off the road after the world tour – I need to be there for them. I need to spend the time with them. I miss them so much when I'm not with them.'
Elton announced his epic world tour in January last year, where he will spend three years saying goodbye to fans as he performs across five continents.
Announcing the decision at a press conference in New York, Sir Elton said his 'priorities have changed', adding that his two sons had changed his and husband David Furnish's lives.
'In 2015 we sat down with a school schedule and I thought I don't want to miss too much of this... My life has changed, my priorities have changed and my priority now is my family,' he said.
The singer, who married David in 2005 and with whom he shares his sons, also insisted that although he was retiring from touring he would not stop making music.
The tour, which will start in September 2018, is named Farewell Yellow Brick Road after his song Goodbye Yellow Brick Road which topped the UK charts in 1973.
The string of shows will start in the US and will cover Europe, Asia, Australasia, South America before returning to Europe and the UK late 2020 and finishing in America in 2021.
