Singer Englebert Humperdinck performed at the Beirut Souks this weekend, having returned to Lebanon after his success in March at Casino du Liban. Known as the “King of Romance,” the Anglo-Indian singer, who was born Arnold George Dorsey, gained international fame with such hits as “Release Me,” “The Last Waltz” and “A Man Without Love.”
Born in Madras, India, but raised in England, Humperdinck’s reputation as a crooner earned him a large female fan base. In the mid 1960s, he changed his name to Englebert Humperdinck, in a reference to the 19th century German opera composer.
Humperdinck represented the United Kingdom in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Although he placed close to the bottom, this didn’t damage the singer’s standing as a singing seducer.
