Egyptian actress Nadia Al Jundi has admitted that it has been her style to always take up difficult roles in movies, but the last several movies have proven to be major failures and a complete disappointment. She does not refer to herself as the “Actress of the people” and feels this title is only a rumor now. Her latest film failures “Bouno Bouno” and “Al Raghba” (Desire) no longer leave her in the competition with Hanan Turk and Mona Zaki.
According to the Saudi daily, Al Riyadh, Al Jundi no longer feels it worth while to compete with any actress due the fact that she has nothing to offer lately. One of the actresses who were a competition for Nadia is Nabila Obeid. Nabila is currently financing a new film which revolves are around the life of the late Princess Diana, from her personal account to make certain that every small detail will be covered. Nabila wants to be sure that this new film will not experience the failure her previous film “Imra’a tahat Al Murakaba” (Woman under investigation) faced. The renowned actress Nabila decided to reopen her cinema production company, which she closed 17 years ago, for her bad rep of producing cinema projects that constantly failed to find an enthusiastic producer.
In the film “Al Raghba”, Nadia agreement to star in the film along with Elham Shahin was a surprise, since Al Jundi has never agreed to collaborate with any other actress in films designed and tailored for her alone. Some have described the cooperation with another star as a normal reaction to the slippage in her star power and diminished presence in the spotlight. This is due to her insistence on performing in a specific genre of film.
The film marked the biggest for Nadia. “Al Raghbah” is based on the American play “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams, written by screenwriter Rafiq Al Sabban, and directed by Ali Bader Khan, who has resumed work after a five-year break following “Al Rajul Athaleth” (The Third Man).
The film explores the life of an aristocratic girl who faces many crises that leave her on the slippery slope to delinquency. The movie analyzes the characters in terms of the psychology that affects their actions and behavior.
Before shooting the film Nadia had made constant visits to a psychologist to learn about emotional reactions and humans behavior when exposed to severe psychological pressures to obtain expert advice in order to perform her role in a natural and convincing manner.
“This has helped me in playing my role…which depends on my psychological performance,” she told the Cairo-based daily Akhbar Al Yawm. “I have been impressed with this character, which caused me anxiety and shivering after each scene, to the extent that the director asked me to stop shooting and have some rest. “But I preferred to make use of the psychological condition in favor of the character and role.”
Nadia Al Jundi has been visiting a psychiatrist lately to try and recover from a severe case of depression she is currently encountering. According to several media sources, Al Jundi is experiencing depression and is on the verge of a nervous breakdown due to the failure of her last three films.
