Although he has become old, the devotion of the Egyptian actor Gamil Rateb for art is still ongoing. He has recently played a role in the film al Saher (the magician) under the direction of late Radwan al Kashef in addition to costarring along with Mohammed Subhi in the series Fares Bila Gawad (knight without hourse).
Rateb started his artistic career in the forties when he traveled to France seeking a job and where he participated in Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing. Then he played other roles on the stage and joined a theatrical troupe before he became a prominent member of the Francis Comedy Troupe.
In 1956 the American director Carol Reed introduced him in the film Trapeze in which Rateb played a role along with Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster and Gina Lollobrigida. In 1961 he played a role in the American film Lawrence of Arabia along with Omar al Sherif and then in two French films Young Wolves and Who is the Spy?
All these activities preceded his participation in a number of Egyptian films including Liar and Whom Should We Shoot at? in 1975.
Rateb plays an important role in 1978, which strongly attracted attention in the film Ascension to the Abyss and then a role in the film Time Conqueror.
The renowned star cooperated with two of the Egyptian comedy stars Adel Imam and Mohammed Subhi in a number of films. He also participated in other films including al Kaif in 1985 along with Mahmoud Abdel Aziz under the direction of Sherif Arafah, Innocent and Their Great Cunning in addition to starring roles in a number of Arab films.
