Bollywood’s biggest spectacular for 2020 takes place in August when singing sensation Sonu Nigam takes the stage at Dubai World Trade Centre. On 21 August, fans of the reigning king of playback can attend an epic performance titled The Light, in which a talented ensemble of 18 musicians will join Nigam to perform classic tracks such as Kal Ho Na Ho and Bole Chudiyan.
Enjoy belated celebrations for Nigam’s birthday, which took place this past 31 July, by bellowing along to memorable soundtracks voiced by the star over an illustrious 28-year-old career. From an array of Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards and even an Oscar nomination in 2015 to his latest Haryana Gaurav Samman from the Government of India, Nigam is the proud recipient of a range of prestigious accolades that prove, time and time again, that he is a dazzling gem in Bollywood’s crown.
He’s one of the few playback artists in the industry whose face is as distinctive as his voice, earning him remarkable success the world over. He may have sung for Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan, Govinda and Akshay Kumar, but he’s always shined through with his own immaculate light.
Don’t miss your chance to see the celebrity singer perform live with tickets from Dubai Calendar, for AED168 only. Organisers are taking all social distancing and security measures to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for audiences.
Excited for the show? Here are five Sonu Nigam classics you should have down to a tee.
Kal Ho Naa Ho - Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)
The title track to Shah Rukh Khan’s romantic drama Kal Ho Naa Ho, this epic number topped Indian radio charts around the world when it debuted in 2003. Its heartfelt message – you only live once – arrives at the movie’s most pivotal point, when the consequences of a love triangle and fatal disease reach a heartbreaking crescendo.
What Is Mobile Number - Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999)
This hilarious and quirky dance number from the turn-of-the-century classic Haseena Maan Jaayegi shows Govinda perhaps at his peak ‘Govinda’. The track’s playful lyrics are the kind you can never quite forget, like riding a bike, and always pull a laugh out of even the most sombre listeners.
Sandese Aate Hai - Border (1997)
A tear-jerker from the award-winning war drama Border, Sandese Aate Hai is a soulful and poignant cry of a soldier missing his loved ones back home. This track was a huge hit soon after its release, earning Nigam a Zee Cine Award for Best Playback Singer in the male category.
Bole Chudiyan - Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001)
Bole Chudiyan is one of the most enduringly popular songs to come out of the blockbuster family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. Along with its iconic cast featuring Sharukh Khan, Amitabh Bachan, Hrithik Roshan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Jaya Bachan, the film's soundtrack was truly one to go down in Bollywood history. The song is not only immensely catchy, which has made it a staple tune at desi weddings till date, it also features a series of memorable scenes in the film’s 3.5-hour plot.
Main Agar Kahoon - Om Shanti Om (2007)
Not to make this list as much about King Khan as it is about Nigam, but the two stars have had onscreen chemistry few playback artists and performers can match. While Deepika Padukone was as much a breakout star from the film, Nigam’s extraordinary vocals and the lyricists’ remarkable talent truly made the movie’s soundtrack one to remember. This particular track comes when Om, a junior film artist and his favourite film star Shantipriya, spend an evening on a magical set, truly capturing the essence of a lovestruck fan.
