Before there was that one channel that monopolized all of US television’s hottest shows- the CW- there were two extremely competitive channels and they were constantly head-to-head: The WB and UPN. Both outlets were filled with everything that 80’s kids grew up on in the 90’s, such as Charmed (the WB) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (UPN.)
Even though the WB was on top, UPN did have a reputable run with shows like Veronica Mars and Sister, Sister, along with its smartest decision; to buy out the original Roswell and Buffy and have it moved over from The WB to UPN.
Still, many believe that the WB was the ultimate champion- with shows like Felicity, Supernatural and Dawson’s Creek. Charmed, however, was the best of all sci-fi/fantasy that was sizzling on air in the late 90’s, by far. Simply hearing the show’s intro theme song still makes us all jump right back to a time in which we were all younger and ready for an episode of chills, thrills, and laughter.
Unfortunately, by the end of the third season, a major feud that had been taking shape for a while had finally reached its climax…Shannen Doherty (Prue Halliwell) and Alyysa Milano (Phoebe Halliwell) could no longer stand working together on set due to irreconcilable differences regarding Milano’s behavior on set which resulted in Doherty departing from the show.
Like the saying goes, the wind from one actress leaving only paves the way for another. By the fourth season premiere, the infamous Rose McGowan joined the cast and surprisingly gave the series just what it needed to continue moving forward. Albeit, many fans were not pleased with the change but surprisingly enough, the show lasted longer than Doherty’s duration in addition to two extra seasons!
Many would say that the best part of the iconic series were the four girls that were chosen to play the main leads. Many up-and-coming actresses were all over the place at the time, but the show runners decided to bring on the aforementioned Shannen Doherty (Mallrats,) Alyssa Milano ( Poison Ivy II,) and Rose McGowan (Jawbreaker.)
Among them all, the one actress that truly stood out was Holly Marie Combs. She was sexy. She was fun. And she was definitely the epitome of sassy. Simply getting to have eight great seasons of this magically delicious show with such wonderful actresses has secured the fact that this show will go down in history as TV nostalgia.
Luckily, DC Insider got the wonderful opportunity to chat with Combs as she was attending a comic-con convention and spoke with her regarding everything from Charmed, its reboot, and Pretty Little Liars! Check it out here!
