Jami Gertz:

Currently Playing Jami Gertz appears on Fox's Ally McBeal this fall as Kimmy Burns, an old law school friend of Ally's. Her character comes complete with family; Marlo Thomas has been cast as her mother.

Back in the Day: Gertz's big break was her role as Muffy Tupperman on the short-lived 1982 TV series Square Pegs. Ready for six degrees of separation and reunion? Gertz's costar was a slightly frumpy Sarah Jessica Parker, who lived with Robert Downey Jr. during the late '80s. Downey costarred with Gertz in the 1987 movie Less Than Zero. Fast-forward to 2000: The '80s alums are reunited on Ally, and Parker has her own show, Sex and the City

The Missing Years: When '80s rock 'n' roller Huey Lewis sang "It's hip to be square," he could have had Gertz in mind. She cut back on her acting schedule to marry a stock investor and raise two kids, occasionally returning to work for such plum roles as Dr. Nina Pomerantz on ER and the crabby fiancée of storm chaser Bill Paxton in Twister
