A young couple was killed in a road accident in Amman on Friday, leaving behind a one-month-old son, the Central Traffic Department (CTD) said on Saturday.

Thaer Khalaf, a 28-year-old interior designer, and his wife Sanaa Awad, 18, were killed when Rawhi Safadi, a well-known Jordanian actor, pulled out from a side road onto Queen Zain Street and crashed into their car, the CTD’s Lt. Col. Yaser Habahbeh told The Jordan Times.

Mohammad Khalaf, Thaer’s brother, said that the couple, married last year, had a one-month-old son.

“Thaer’s son was born on August 1 and the baby’s father died on September 2,” he said, noting that the baby was with his grandparents at the time of the accident.

“Thaer was loved by everyone. He loved life and was ambitious,” he added.

Safadi is in critical condition at the King Hussein Medical City.

Sari Asaad, the president of the Jordan Artists Association, said the accident happened because Safadi had a stroke while driving.

“We are following up on his condition which is getting worse. He is suffering uncontrollable cerebral haemorrhage, a deep wound from the eyebrow to the ear and a fracture in his chest,” Asaad told The Jordan Times.

He expressed his deep condolences to the families of the couple who died in the accident.

Asaad also urged people to stop spreading rumours about the accident, and said social media had become a space “to share lies”.

Safadi was travelling to Jerash, 48km north of Amman, where he and his colleague Mahmoud Zyoudi had been invited, when the accident happened, the association leader said.
