Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus‏ announced she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 56-year-old Veep star shared a brief message on Twitter announcing the diagnosis on Thursday afternoon.

"One in 8 women get breast cancer," she wrote. "Today, I'm the one."

Louis-Dreyfus‏ went on to state that she was grateful she is equipped to handle the diagnosis and highlighted the need for care for those who are less fortunate.

"The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union," she said. "The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let's fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality."

HBO told the Hollywood Reporter Louis-Dreyfus received the diagnosis on Sept. 17, just after she was awarded Emmy for best actress in a comedy series for her role in Veep.

"Our love and support go out to Julia and her family at this time. We have every confidence she will get through this with her usual tenacity and undaunted spirit, and look forward to her return to health and to HBO for the final season of Veep," HBO said.

The network added that production for Veep will be adjusted to accommodate her condition if needed.

It had no bearing in the decision to renew Veep for a final season. The writers will continue prepping as business as usual, and HBO will adjust the production schedule as needed," HBO said.
