Instagram wielded its torches and pitchforks on Tuesday after American reality TV star Khloe Kardashian shared a photo of herself donning a niqab, a traditional Muslim garment worn in public that covers the head and face.
The image, taken in Dubai, where most women adhere to a conservative dress code, shows the Keeping Up with the Kardashians starlet veiled in black, with only her mascara-rimmed eyes peering out of the head covering. Though foreigners are not required to wear full-face veils in the United Arab Emirates, Kardashian nonetheless opted for the modest look, triggering an onslaught of angry comments.
Captioned "Habibi Love," an Arabic term of endearment, the snap was deemed offensive by many, who took to the 30-year-old's Instagram account to air their anger. Some of Kardashian's nearly 23 million followers called her out for disrespecting Islam and its customs, while others said she was minimizing a very important issue by turning the hijab into a mere fashion statement.
Khloe's half-sister Kendall Jenner and Palestinian model Gigi Hadid also drew online fire when they posted pictures of them veiled prior to a mosque visit last year. (Instagram/Gigi Hadid)
