Lord spare us.

Kid Rock—a.k.a. Robert Ritchie, a.k.a. Guy Who Thought the Name “Kid Rock” Would Make for a Badass Singer Name—is threatening to run for the Senate. As in the US Senate.

It all goes back to a Twitter announcement in which Kid Rock confirmed that the website www.kidrockforsenate.com is legit. As in the website, which features Kid Rock sitting on a chair and next to a buck, on a star-spangled chair with the words ARE YOU SCARED? subtly placed beneath is legit.

Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. Maybe in a world where Oprah Winfrey has also flirted with the idea of being Commander-in-Chief of the world’s largest military and Kanye West is blathering about making a run too, in a world where the US President is a TV star better known for his Twitter tantrums and alleged corruption than his grasp of policy or law, Kid Rock is just apt l'esprit d'escalier to what is an increasingly hysterical era of world politics. Count on the United States to like its celebrities running for office the way the rest of us like political power to rest in competent hands.

Short of this being a publicity stunt for a has-been—and god, that’s somehow almost as bad—we’re in for a few years where your entertainment and political channels might as well just merge.

No more celebrities running for office, please. You’re going to kill the rest of us out of anxiety.
