The international contest for electing Miss World will be run Wednesday in the Egyptian resort area of Sharm al Sheikh amid controversy and opposition by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.
Competitors from 48 Asian, African, European and American countries will participate in addition to participants from Arab states including Egypt and Algeria.
The contest of sea costumes began in Sharm al Sheikh Tuesday while the main contest will be run Wednesday. A press conference was held Monday in the area in preparation for Miss world international contest with international TV networks correspondents and local and international press reporters attending the conference.
The daily al Ahram quoted the contest organizers as confirming that Sharm al Sheikh had immense touristic infrastructure and capabilities that qualify it to hold international festivals particularly in the world of costumes and moda. They added that preparations were underway to hold an international contest for costumes among the area mountains at a stage prepared for that purpose. This, according to the organizers, will serve as a new touristic attraction to the city and the area as a whole.
For his part, Sharm al Sheikh Resort Hotel manager defended his hotel’s hosting of this controversial event saying that the objective was enhancing tourism to Egypt.
“The hotel occupancy has increased by 104 percent,” the Domina Coral Bay Hotel manager, Hussein Hasanin told the press, adding that “we are convincing tourists to share rooms with each other.”
He said, “the hotel, local and international sponsors finance the contest which has ignited opposition by some of the Muslim Brotherhood lawmakers.” -- Albawaba.com
