Nabila al-Khair says her status as a woman guides her work

Her status as a woman guides Nabila al-Khair’s work, the Bahraini artist reflects this femininity in her choice of colors and subjects.

“As a hobby, I worked in the fashion industry until I carved out a niche in colors which helped launch my artistic journey. It is color which creates a motivation in art,” she explained.

Color is an aspect of artistic creation that is important to this artist; she paints the richness of autumn’s velvet browns and the startling silver decorations that date back to the ancient Dilmun civilization.

Al-Khair has more than 25 years of experience under her paint-flecked belt; she has participated in exhibitions around the Middle East region and beyond.

Such depth in experience has led to Nabila creating her own style, one that has been matured by perseverance and a slow perfection of technique.

Her paintings celebrate women, all Nabila’s works are dedicated to the subject. “The woman is a beautiful creature and is special in everything,” she said.

“The woman is the bedrock of my artwork, and the main motivation which nudges me to initiate a new art project,” added the artist.

Women play the protagonist in al-Khair’s paintings, the supporting character is the color Red.

“I use red as it embodies emotional warmth. It’s a cozy color,” described the artist.

“Every artwork has got one of woman’s secrets,” said the artist knowingly, her work depicts the ethereal mystery of women.
