ALBAWABA - Popular streaming platform Netflix recently announced that it's developing a "live-action" adaptation of Atlus' Persona games, sparking mixed reactions from fans on social media, as reported by Variety.
Christopher Monfette, best known for hit shows such as Star Trek: Picard and 12 Monkeys, will serve as the live-action showrunner and executive producer alongside SEGA's Toru Nakahara. Moreover, American production company 21 Labs will oversee the project as it comes to fruition.
Many fans voiced their frustration upon hearing the news, with several saying that the Persona games don't need a live-action series because they are already story-rich RPGs with fleshed-out characters and animated cinematics. Others pointed out that the Persona franchise also has several anime under its belt, deeming a live-action series "useless."
Netflix's Persona 'live-action' series sparks mixed reactions
A fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "This is literally the worst possible news."
Another added in speculation, "Live-action Persona? With the Picard guy running it? This is either going to be an absolute masterpiece of psychological horror or the most cursed adaptation since the Last Airbender movie. No in-between."
One more wrote, "Lmao Netflix about to turn Persona into another watered-down flop, watch Joker get recast as some random dude from Iowa."
Persona solidified its place in gaming as one of the best JRGPs of recent memory for its innovative turn-based gameplay, stunning art style, and flashy visuals. The game's sequel, Persona 6, was announced alongside a remake of Persona 4 during the most recent Xbox Game Show.
