Who didn't get into "Mr. Robot" when the hacker TV series hit our TV screens in March 2015?
The show, starring Egyptian-American actor Rami Malek and American actor Christian Slater, ended with great suspense, leaving us on the edge of our seats and dying to find out what will happen in season 2 (set to air in 2016).
But what was so appealing about the series that it became an overnight sensation? Malek says that it "struck a nerve with people."
The dark drama follows the life of anti-social hacker Elliott (Malek), who, with the help of his secret underground hacker organization, attempts to bring down corporate America, including the company he is paid to protect, which presents him with a moral dilemma.
However, it wasn't the plot alone that grabbed millions of viewers' attention. It was the actors' impressive performances and their dedication to portraying each character so accurately that earned them nominations for awards from the Critics' Choice, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Screen Actors Guild.
"The show offers characters on the fringes of society trying to find their way in," Malek says, "and I think that’s something that people just got charged by."
While fans of the show were desperate to take a sneak peek at spoilers when season 1 was still on the air, Malek was careful to keep creator and showrunner Sam Esmail's well-crafted ideas a secret.
"I didn't tell anyone, actually," he says. "I have a twin brother and I would sometimes sit down and watch things while he was watching them, just to see his eyes light up and the reaction on his face. He’s a very critical viewer, of my performance and also the show as a whole."
Indeed, after the big reveals, Malek recalls that his brother “looked at me and just said ‘why didn’t you say anything? You could have told me! I’m your brother! I’m not going to tell anyone!’ It was enjoyable to watch him squirm through it as well."
