After taking off the gown of Hag Mitwalli, the Egyptian renowned actor Noor al Sherif put the gown of a revolutionary leader who dedicated his life defending the Arab issue through his new play Lan Tusqot al Quds (Jerusalem Won’t Fall).
“The events depicted by the play took place long time ago and nowadays we see the same events recurring in the Palestinian lands. I want the public to think and reach a common stance towards what is going on and not merely the shouting of slogans. I want a new starting point,” Sherif told the daily al Hayat.
He added, “when you tackle a historic event, it is difficult to add to it. Your role will be limited to replaying it with shedding light on the areas, which the director wants to highlight to ensure that it resembles the current situation. The real responsibility lies here as I can depict history through art and not more; otherwise there will be forgery. This is due to the fact that I cannot turn defeated armies into victorious ones. On the other hand, we can adjust the end, correct faults and accept criticism in social drama.”
“This is exactly what I faced in the TV series al Hag Mitwalli and his family despite the fact that the reactions to the series caused me a lot of concern. Although I was delighted with Hag Mitwalli which recorded a smash hit, I never expected such a character and his behavior would mask important issues such as the Palestinian issue, siege around the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, the slaughtering of Afghan people and the skyrocketing dollar price against the Egyptian pound,” added Sherif.
“I became angry and upset when I found people busy with such a series neglecting more important issues in our life which I consider an annoying sign. Will people resort to entertainment only?” the renowned star inquired.
He added, “this was planned long time ago and unfortunately we are surrendering to it. People do not want anything serious and all what concerns them is fast food. This means lack of commitment, belonging and the resurrection of selfishness. The American films have rooted this concept like the Indian films which have made the individual hero the solution through whom all will gain victory.” -- Albawaba.com
