The play al Fawz 58 (Victory 58) is considered a new artistic phenomenon that represents art and theatrical creativity in Oman Sultanate. The play has left its big influence on the audience when it was staged at Salalah Autumn Festival last year.
The Omani script writer Emad bin Mohsen al Shanfari told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), “the play is about the incident of the ship Victory 58 on board of which hundreds of inhabitants from the Omani province of Zufar headed for the gulf area seeking work due to the difficult living conditions at that time. Due to climatic conditions the ship sank with all people on board. This is considered an important era in Oman’s history in general and Zufar province in particular.
Shanfari pointed out that the play participated in the Cultural Festival in Qatar and Egypt last year as it recorded a big success and left its influence on every one from the Egyptian or Qatari audiences who saw it. He noted that the play received invitation from Awni Karoumi, Professor of Theater at Hamburg University in Germany to be portrayed at Berlin Festival next September.
He added that he has agreed with Karoumi to rewrite the play’s script next July offering his experience in this respect so that it will suitable to be portrayed in Berlin. The play will mark the first Omani play to be staged at an international festival.
Shanfari indicated that participation in an international conference is a dream of every Omani artist in particular and every gulf artist in general -- Albawaba.com
