Egyptian singer Shereen Wajdi returns to acting after a two-year absence to star in a new TV drama “Muthakarat Muhandis Masri” (The Diary of an Egyptian Engineer). Shereen will play the role of a singer who falls in love with an engineer after meeting him on one of her tours.
The London based daily, Al Sharq Al Awsat, reported that the beginning scenes will be shot during the Eid Al Fitir holiday, after actor Izzat Al Alali, who will be costarring with Shereen, returns from Saudi Arabia (Umra).
The series written by Tharwat Abdul Mune’m and directed by Ibrahim Samad will also costar Egyptian Zizi Al Badwai, Mohmoud Al Jundi, Ola Rami, and Rashwan Tawfiq.
The decision to return to acting was not on Shereen’s agenda after the great success of her latest album "Lao Beinna Eih" (Whatever There is Between Us), and the decision to dedicate all her time in the coming years to singing, leaving the career of acting behind her. Wajdi admitted that acting took her from singing for several years. "Throughout the 11 years as a singer, I came out with only four albums in my name," said Wajdi
Shereens last appearance on the small screen was part three of the drama series “Bawabit El Halawani” (El Halawani’s Gate) also playing the role of a singer who encounters a number of prominent political figures yet ends up falling for another singer played by Ali Al Hajar.
The English-graduate singer from Ein Shams University, signed late last September, a three-year contract with Rotana Production Company. The contract stipulates the launching of one album each year, the first of which to be released during the upcoming Eid Al Fitr holiday.
The first album in the contract, whose name has not been revealed, will include ten different songs written and composed by a number of young names in the music world, like Amr Mustafa and Mohammed Rahim.
Rotana general manager, Mr. Salim Al Hindi, has personally headed for Cairo to sign the contract with the renowned singer in a ceremony attended by Shereen's husband businessman Ehab Tal'at and Rotana's office manger in Cairo, Dr. Mohammed Hazem.
Earlier this year, Shereen Wajdi has won the 2002 title for best singer in the Arab world. - Albawaba.com
