ALBAWABA - Official confirmation of Shrek 5's production has led to its scheduled release in July of 2026. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are all involved in the film's production.
Confirmed is the eagerly awaited return of the charming green ogre, Shrek, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz set to reprise their roles in the film, marking the first Shrek picture in sixteen years.
There is no information available on the storyline of the film; however, Myers will portray the main character, Diaz will provide the voice of Princess Fiona, Shrek's wife, and Murphy will reprise his role as Donkey, Shrek's sidekick.
Dreamworks Animation and Universal Pictures officially began developing Shrek 5 on July 9. Dreamworks Animation and Universal Pictures have scheduled the film's release in theaters for July 1, 2026, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the first Shrek film.
In the 2001 release of the first film, Shrek embarked on a journey with his noble steed, Donkey. The journey's goal was to save Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded tower. The fairytale took a turn for the worse when it revealed that Fiona herself transformed into an ogre after dark. This was an appearance that she maintained after she and Shrek fell in love with each other.
Subsequent films such as Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After, the final installment in the trilogy, further developed the narrative over the years.
And while there is no doubt that fans are super enthusiastic about the prospect of returning to Far, Far Away once more after a period of thirteen years, Myers himself has expressed how much the process of making the films was a great part of his life, particularly with regard to the innovative narrative.
"I love the idea of taking a fairytale and turning it on its head," he told the magazine GQ back in 2022, "and having it be that all the traditional bad guys are good guys, and all the traditional good guys are bad guys."
