"I am sad for Egypt and I am depressed over what is happening in my country," Maali Zayed is quoted as saying shortly before she passed away.

The Egyptian actress died on Monday at age 61 from lung cancer. Her deterioration of health came on suddenly and left her family, fans, and fellow celebrities reeling in shock. She had just received the cancer diagnosis earlier this month.

Many celebrities came to bid her farewell at the burial ceremony, including Elham Shahin, Ashraf Zaki, Hala Sidqi, Samah Anwar, Mervat Amin, head of the Actors Syndicate Ashraf Abdel Ghafour and many others.

Not long before her death, Maali had held an interview on the Egyptian satellite channel Masr Al Yawm where she shared her anguish over her country's sad state of affairs.

In addition to the quote above, Maali was also reported as sharing the following statement with viewers, "We do not know the worth of Egypt and only feel its worth when we travel abroad, if we take advantage of the natural and human resources we have in the right way, there would not be one hungry person in the streets."

May she rest in peace.
