The Mummy is already shaping up as one of the most anticipated thrillers of the summer, and on Thursday, fans got more to snack on.
Just days before Universal unveils an extended preview for the Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe-headlined motion picture, the company unveiled a new poster, showing a chilling image of the film's titular character, played by Sofia Boutella.
The poster - which the movie company released at CinemaCon in Las Vegas Thursday, shows half of Boutella's face, as she's sporting two irises in her eye, with special characters written on her face.
According to am IMDb description of the upcoming film, an ancient princess named Ahmanet 'is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert,' bringing to modern day 'terrors that defy human comprehension.'
It's been a busy week for Boutella, as the 34-year-old Algerian stunner was awarded with the convention's Female Rising Star Of Tomorrow honors at a ceremony Thursday.
A day earlier, she appeared on a panel with the movie's director Alex Kurtzman and co-stars including Annabelle Wallis.
On the panel, Boutella - who's also cast in this summer's Atomic Blonde - revealed more about her character Ahmanet in the thriller. She said that while Ahmanet was once in line to be a Pharoah, plans went awry.
Ahmanet also was imbued with the powers to summon gods - but that also goes awry, setting the stage for her return.
Ahmanet 'summoned the wrong god and that stays with her,' she said, according to The Wrap. 'Playing a monster was really interesting to me, but also the fact that the mummy was a woman. Whenever something happens, there’s always a monster within us.'
Cruise, speaking with Entertainment Tonight in December, said that the film 'is a real monster movie' with other key cinematic elements.
'It's also going to have humor, some romance and it's very, very scary,' he said. 'There's some scenes and sequences in here that are really epic and people are going to jump.'
The Mummy, also featuring Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance, hits theaters June 9.
