Yesterday, a filmmaker was arrested in Istanbul in what the state-run Anadolu Agency described as “suspected membership” to the group allegedly behind last year’s failed coup d’etat.
Istanbul prosecutors issued a warrant for director Ali Avci, who was arrested in his Istanbul home.
But a perhaps more interesting motive emerges when one considers the timing of the incident.

A trailer for Avci’s latest film had gone online before the arrest. Awakening (or “Uyanıs”) contains a scene in which President Recep Erdogan’s family is killed and President Erdogan himself is placed under gunpoint. The trailer debuted two days before the first anniversary of the failed coup last year: July 15th.
The Anadolu Agency said that another wanted individual, Fetullah Karabiber, was arrested at the site after first providing a false name.
