HBO has released a trailer for its upcoming TV show The Deuce, starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal but, more importantly, penned by the talent behind Treme and The Wire.

Yep, David Simon is back, with his frequent collaborator, George Pelecanos, co-creating The Deuce. The Deuce is set around Times Square in New York, narrating the rise and legalization of the porn industry in New York in the 1970s. The first season will play-out over eight episodes.

Watch the trailer here:

On his website, Simon’s (outdated) “In Development” section describes the project as “a narrative that parallels the history of midtown’s rise as a porn-and-drugs demimonde to the point where it came to dominate the culture and economy of central Manhattan.”

Simon is a former crime reporter and a nonfiction writer who most famously created and (co-)wrote most of The Wire, a television show often dismissed as “one of the greatest television shows ever made” but, which in this writer’s opinion, escapes its literary form (if television can be considered literature) to become a bona fide argument against institutional endurance and systemic destruction at the cost of humanity in a first-world country’s postmodern era. Do watch it. Simon’s follow-up show, Treme, was a similar success, a tribute to life and endurance told through the story of New Orleans recovering from disaster. Watch that, too. Show Me a Hero, a miniseries, was similarly powerful, telling the story of civil rights violations and desegregation efforts which tear apart a community. Generation Kill made an impact, too; the AV Club rated every episode an A, its highest possible grade.

Pelecanos served as executive producer for Treme and producer on The Wire (for its first few seasons),and wrote some of their most powerful pay-offs.

Richard Price, also from The Wire but also co-writer of The Night Of, will act as executive producer.

Price and Pelecanos are also accomplished novelists; Price is most famous for Freedomland and Clockers, but has also received critical acclaim for novels like Lush Life. Pelecanos is most famous for The Night Gardener, but has written other, powerful books like Right as Rain and The Way Home.

Also joining them on the writing staff are Lisa Lutz (author of The Spellman Files), Megan Abbott (author of You Will Know Me), Marc Henry Johnson (a film producer), Will Ralston, and Chris Yakaitis.

The Deuce will begin airing September 10th.
