A Syrian character actor famous for playing muscle-bound bodyguards has died under mysterious circumstances, media reports said Friday.
Fahd Najjar, 44, was a martial arts practitioner and bodybuilder who made a name playing the roles of bodyguards and thugs in several popular television series.
A magazine specialized in the entertainment industry, Layalina, said Najjar was the victim of a gunshot wound, and pro-regime social media dubbed him a “martyr,” with differing accounts over his demise, as some said he had been killed fighting rebel groups in Deraa province.
However, pro-opposition media outlets said that he succumbed to injuries sustained in a car accident caused by excessive speed, and that he rarely left the Damascus suburb of Jaramana, where he manned checkpoints for regime paramilitary forces.
