The source explained to the outlet, that sparks and warmth remained between the couple even after they split in 2016 after six years together.
'He has made it a priority and they've never fallen out of love,' they dished.
'Even though they are broken up and not together right now, when a loved one goes through a crisis, your true colors of who you are as a person come out and he has really portrayed himself in the same way that she's spoken about him in all of her previous public interviews.'
And it seems that those closest to Demi are taking notice of Wilmer's actions, 'Her family and close friends really appreciate him,' the insider added.
Last Saturday, Demi left Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
She then took a private plane to one of the nation's leading addiction facilities, which is outside California.
It is unknown how long she will stay there, but is expected to remain under care for at least 30 days.
On Friday, however, she temporarily left the facility for a few days to go to Chicago to see a psychiatrist who focuses on sobriety, mental health and overall wellness, according to TMZ.
According to the outlet's sources, she 'jumped' at the opportunity to see the psychiatrist in order to stay healthy and maintain her sobriety.
Demi jetted off to the Illinois city with her mom via private jet, landing at around 2 am local time on Friday.
The singer went to the specialist at the recommendation of her doctors at her rehab facility.
Demi was rushed to hospital on July 24 after being found unresponsive at her home in the Hollywood Hills.
The star had to be revived with a shot of Narcan, which is used for opioid overdoses, however, Demi did not disclose to authorities which drug she'd been using.
The singer was at a birthday party with members of her tour earlier that night.
