Not his daughter, not his mistresses, but his Guards. The Amazonian Guards: These are the ladies in Gaddafi’s life everyone’s talking about.

We’ve heard of Leaders of States in time memoriam surrounding themselves with women.  In some parts of Europe having mistresses is par for the course for men, culturally, and never more so than for men in power. In other quarters, it causes scandals of sleaze in the cabinet and arouses much uproar – at times spilling over into protests, as witnessed with Italy’s Main Man, Berlusconi under female fire over his one (Moroccan) girl-too many.

In the Middle East too such chauvinism is common-place. Gaddafi takes this figurative notion of being surrounded by ladies literally and recruits ladies to accompany him in the name of state security. As such, he is certainly living the male dream of power and women (or harem) by having an entourage of female supposedly virgin body guards that live and ‘will’ (and have done) die for him.

With just one daughter, Ayesha, he has reinforcements of female presence in the ‘family’ through his Amazonian all-female–strong team of bodyguards.

Women in army gear? It is well known that a lot of countries are promoting more women on the military front line. But in the Middle East this is still not a common phenomenon outside of Israel—where the state carries a whopping women third of all IDF soldiers who can serve in 90% of all roles.

The Libyan authoritarian ruler literally places his women- in the form of militarized security-  on the first line of defence, recruiting  between 30 and 40 female body guards.

The Amazonian Guard is the stuff of legend- but real and on Gaddafi’s ground: the uniformed women are very much live in the flesh, and are photographed all the time with Gaddafi, especially when he travels.

In fact, at this time they may be the most loyal instrument he has: as units of his army defects  en mass, the media and international community charge him with genocide, and Libyans from across the board are demanding loudly an end to his four-decade rule, he cleaves more defiantly to his loyal ladies.

To qualify they must all be virgins and take a vow of chastity when becoming official bodyguards.  Wow, is this a nunnery or the girl guide scouts? (and even their oath doesn’t extend to their virgin-hood but their good citizenship and serving the country, helping grannies and wot not..)
