ALBAWABA - Amazon’s new 7.65GW AI data center power plant being built in Texas is a custom 35-turbine gas plant authorized to emit 33 million tons of annual greenhouse gases – making it the largest source of carbon dioxide pollution in the U.S. once completed.
Despite the gigantic plant pumping tens of millions of tons of harmful gasses into the atmosphere, Amazon still insists it remains committed to 2040 net-zero carbon emission goals.
Amazon, which already operates the most data centers worldwide, will have its flagship power plant built in Pecos County, Texas where it will support an AI data center at the same site.
The plant will generate 7.65gigawatts of power through 35 turbines burning natural gas releasing 33 million tons of CO₂ annually, according to a NY Times report.
The polluting trend is not unique to Amazon, with Microsoft also increasing its carbon footprint despite climate pledges, the source of the increase appears to be AI as companies race to build more and more data centers.
“The world looks different now than when we co-founded the climate pledge,” said Margaret Callahan, an Amazon spokeswoman. Still, “our commitment hasn’t changed,” she said.
