Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) has been contracted to build all low-voltage main distribution systems and associated sub-distribution systems for expansion of the Dubai International Airport. The order is valued at approximately 20 million euros. This is the third individual project contract Siemens has been awarded as part of the expansion plan. In December 2003, Siemens was awarded contracts to build a cargo center and a baggage handling system.
For Siemens A&D, the new contract awarded as part of the expansion plan for the Dubai International Airport is the biggest single order to date for low-voltage distribution systems. These products are produced at the Siemens plant in Leipzig. "The order underlines our outstanding position in the global market and documents our competitiveness in the field of low-voltage distribution systems", says Rudolf Martin Siegers, head of A&D's Low-Voltage Controls and Distribution Division. Siemens also regards its contract for the third project in the expansion of the Dubai International Airport as proof of its competence as airport equipment supplier.
Sivacon distribution systems with ratings of up to 4,000 A will be supplied beginning October 2005. Work on the main and associated sub-distribution systems for the airport, including cabling, is to be completed by the end of 2006.
Dubai International Airport is to become one of the biggest air traffic hubs in the world. At present, the airport serves around 25 million passengers. Following its expansion, the volume of traffic is expected to increase to as much as 60 million passengers by the year 2010. The operator plans to invest over three billion euros in the expansion effort.
