According to the UNHCR, today's global refugee crisis is the worst the world has seen since World War II, with over 50 million people worldwide who have been forced to leave their homes. This includes hundreds of thousands of "boat people," desperate refugees from Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere who have made dangerous illegal voyages to Europe across the Mediterannean Sea. Thousands have drowned to death along the way.
Still, atrocities like Tuesday's attacks in Brussels and the Paris attacks in November have led many people to blame refugees for bringing violence to Europe along with them. A poem shared this week on Twitter tries to fight this misconception:
