Syria’s rebel groups, many of them Islamist, have failed to defeat the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. Why? Cause of the Russian air force? Lack of unity? According to Sheikh Abdullah al-Muhaysini, a Saudi cleric in Syria, the reason is cursing.
The New Arab reports that al-Muhaysini tweeted that taking God’s name in vain is the reason the rebels have not won. “Six years of revolution and there are still some people who insult God,” he said. “This is the reason that our victory has been delayed.”
So who is al-Muhaysini? According to The Long War Journal and others, he’s a hardline cleric with established ties to Al-Qaeda. He is very active on social media, including Twitter, and releases frequent audio messages attacking Assad, Iran and Russia, in addition to others.
