The WikiLeaks release of Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager John Podesta’s emails mostly pertained to the US domestic scene. However, one leaked Bill Clinton email includes the former president’s explanation on why Jordan and Lebanon are more stable than their neighbors.

As seen in the above tweet by Foreign Policy’s Middle East editor David Kenner, the male Clinton said “the two most moderate countries” Jordan and Lebanon have not fallen into chaos because “more tolerant, more open, more flexible societies.”
According to WikiLeaks, the speech was in 2015 at a fundraiser for Bill’s wife, Hillary – the current Democratic nominee for president.
So is Clinton right? Certainly, Jordan and Lebanon aren’t experiencing the hardships and conflict Syria and Iraq are. But there is discrimination in each country, despite Clinton’s claims of their openness. For example, the death of Jordanian Christian YouTube personality Shadi Abu Jaber prompted some Jordanians to say mercy after death is only for Muslims on social media.
Still, Jordan and Lebanon been at more-or-less at peace domestically since their internal conflicts last century.
