Khalifa University faculty member awarded Distinction of Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science

Professor Stephen P. DeWeerth, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Khalifa University, was recently elected to the rank of Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society, and the election as a Fellow is an honour bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.
Professor DeWeerth earned the distinction “for contributions in the field of neuroengineering, particularly for the real-time modeling of sensorimotor systems and for the development of neural interfacing technology.”
Remarking on the award, Professor Tod Laursen, President of Khalifa University, said, “On behalf of Khalifa University I would like to express how proud I am to see Professor DeWeerth receive this acknowledgment for his groundbreaking work. This is a significant acknowledgement of both our faculty and our academic leadership.”
Professor DeWeerth, commenting on the award, stated, “It is a true honour to have been elected as a Fellow of the AAAS. This recognition by my peers is humbling, and is an acknowledgment of the research that we are undertaking at Khalifa University.”
Professor Stephen P. DeWeerth is one of 503 AAAS members who were given this award in 2011 in recognition of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science and its applications.
