People in Morocco have been holding protests demanding the cancellation of the Mawazeen Festival and that the budget set for it be distributed to help the poor families in Morocco. Protesters have threatened that if the festival took place they will throw rotten eggs and tomatoes at the stars taking part in it.
It is said that the highlight of the festival will be Egyptian superstar Amro Diab and Lebanese/Columbian singer Shakira.
Members of the movement ‘Parka’ or ‘Kifaya’ in the city of Marrakesh demanded a stopping of the festivals and protesters in the streets of all age groups and different political views accused the organizers of the festival of wasting public money. The slogan protesters kept repeating was “the people demand cancelling Mawzeen”.
The city of Rabat, which is the home of the festival, witnessed the largest protests against the festival and protesters threatened to take drastic measures if the organizers of the event insisted on holding the festival.
Protesters stressed that the need for bread is more essential to Moroccans than a performance by Shakira or Amro.
