A hashtag is going viral in Arabic which has Twitter users in the Middle East describing what they would do if the power was in their hands. While some have taken it very seriously, saying that they would seek revenge on their enemies, others have adopted a more light-hearted and humorous tone.

Viral hashtags are common on Twitter in Arabic. So far in 2016, there have been hashtags asking for the loudspeakers of mosques to be banned, for gay rights to be respected, and even one which provoked debate with its wording: “Women are boring.”

Here are some of the Tweets from “If the power was in my hands” - #اذا_السلطه_بايدي.

If the power was in my hands I would govern with equality

If the power was in my hands, I wouldn’t stay poor

If the power was in my hands, I’d make laws to force people to shower five times [per day] in the summer

If the power was in my hands it'd be forbidden to start work before 10 am

If the power was in my hands, I would eradicate poverty

If the power was in my hands, I'd put all the governments in Lebanon in the trash

If the power was in my hands I'd take revenge for our martyred [Sheikh] Nimr Al-Nimr
