Dutch activists in The Netherlands have taken it upon themselves to rename 13 streets in honor of Ahed Tamimi, the 17 year-old Palestinian activist who was sentenced to eight months in prison after slapping an Israeli soldier.

The streets are in The Hague, Rotterdam, Groningen, Leeuwarden, Grijpskerk, Assen, Leiden, Heemstede, Tilburg, Vlaardingen, Maarssen and Nijmegen, as well as Amsterdam. One of the streets that was renamed leads to the Israeli Embassy.

The arrest and detention of Ahed Tamimi received global attention after a video surfaced of Tamimi slapping an Israeli soldier. Though clearly not presenting a threat to the soldier, Ahed was arrested in a night-time raid shortly after the incident.

She was then tried in a military court despite being a teenage, non-combatant, sparking outcries that she was being mistreated and her high-profile case being used by the Israeli government to demonstrate its unflinching stance against Palestinian activism.

Tamimi was charged with 12 crimes, including assault, "incitement" and past instances of stone-throwing against occupying Israeli soldiers.

Ahed Tamimi and her family have been involved in activism for years, and Tamimi’s little cousin, Mohammed, was put in a medically induced coma after being shot in the head by Israeli soldiers.

“We cannot stand up to Israel alone. The international community and all people of conscience must also stand for justice and not tolerate Israel’s abuses of our rights, especially against children,” another cousin of Ahed Tamimi wrote in an op-ed for the Washington Post.

The Dutch activists appear to have taken this message to heart.
