Emergency negotiations were unfolding this morning after an EgyptAir flight was hijacked en route from Cairo to Alexandria.

But for some Egyptians the hijacking is no cause for panic. After it emerged that the plane was diverted to Cyprus, some have taken to Twitter to express their envy towards passengers who have been unexpectedly airlifted out of the Middle East.

Users tweeted with a hashtag that means “wish I was hijacked with them” to comment that a free  trip to Europe seemed a rather a desirable prospect. A worsening political situation and continuing economic hardship means many Egyptians would love to leave their country, with Europe being a preferred destination.

How lovely, leave Cairo on a plane and instead of landing in Alexandria you land in Cyprus. Really, how nice for those people

[To] the guy who hijacked the plane: We hope this won't be the last time!

I'll go to any country. Any European country. Arab countries? Yuck. Arabs? Yuck. Europe is friendly

When he kidnapped the Egyptians and took them to Cyprus... is this still kidnapping? That's the dream of every Egyptian!
