According to social media rumors in Arabic, former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak passed away earlier today. This follows the reported arrest of his sons over an alleged stock market manipulation yesterday, also in Egypt.

The reports are not confirmed. No evidence has been provided or official statements made, which may bring into question the veracity of the rumors.

Hosni Mubarak was President of Egypt between 1981-2011, stepping down from power in the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. A former officer in the Egyptian air force, he stood trial and was convicted of life imprisonment in June 2012. By March 2017 he was released, after a previous ruling saw the life sentence overturned.
