When Saudi media company U-Turn published a photograph of a mixed Iftar yesterday, it ignited a fierce debate on KSA Twitter.

The controversy? Whether men and women should have been together at the event.

U-Turn, a digital media company that specialises in advertising, released the photographs of an Iftar in Jeddah including male and female members of staff yesterday. In Saudi, Jeddah has something of a reputation for being on the liberal side, and the Iftar sparked a fierce debate in Saudi society.

Some were outraged at the deviance of the young media workers mixing among each other.

The scum of society.

Others, while not exactly in fervent support of the mixing of young people at social events, thought the whole thing had been blown way out of proportion.

Their parents are OK, and they are OK, why are you making a fuss? You are only ruining your fasting. You are only being annoying.

Why are you feeling weird about this? They are working together everyday and the appear on TV and YouTube, and you watch them and laugh. Who’s in the wrong?

A hashtag meaning #UTURN_Mixing_Debauchery_and_Decay was trending on Twitter all day.
